Project Homemade Barbecue Sauce

If you have a bottle of store-bought barbecue sauce in your fridge, then please. Let me help you. My super simple homemade barbecue sauce recipe might just turn you around on the bottled stuff forever.

This sauce I whipped up was so good I didn’t even get a picture of it before it was gone. It looks like barbecue sauce. It is absolutely insane on meatloaf.

Project Meatloaf Barbecue Sauce


  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 4 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 3 Tbsp molasses
  • 1 Tbsp packed dark brown sugar
  • 2 tsp chili garlic sauce
  • 1/8 tsp hot smoked paprika

Mix ingredients together in a small saucepan. Simmer over low heat until thickened, about 8 minutes, stirring frequently.

That’s it! Now, what to put it on?

Anything you put barbecue sauce on, but it is killer on meatloaf. Brush it on thickly 15 minutes into its cooking time, then again 15 minutes later.

When the meatloaf is done, brush on one more layer and place the loaf 6 inches from the broiler element, set to high, until glaze is bubbly and beginning to darken in color, about 3 minutes.
